About Me

My name is Rosemary Akudo Lawson, a Nigerian and an Igbo by tribe. I am from a family of six, and the first child of my parents. I am currently concluding my graduate studies in the vibrant field of human rights and social justice in Canada, a journey that reflects my dedication to creating meaningful change. Before relocating to this new chapter, I dedicated a decade of my professional life as a programme officer with prominent multinational NGOs in Nigeria. During this time, I immersed myself in community development initiatives and passionately advocated for marginalised groups, gaining invaluable hands-on experience that deepened my commitment to social justice and equity. I worked at the community level, covering all nine Niger Delta states in Nigeria, training youths, men, community leaders, and women in the art of advocacy, leadership, conflict resolution, and peace building, giving them a voice and building their capacity to demand accountability and transparency from their elected representatives.

I have a Master’s degree in Gender and Development Studies from the University of Port Harcourt in Nigeria. This education helped me comprehend the intersection between gender, power, and development. It gave me the skills to address the challenges faced by vulnerable groups. My career shows my strong dedication to promoting social justice, especially for women’s rights. I am dedicated to dismantling the obstacles that prevent individuals from accessing vital opportunities and achieving justice, particularly in cases of domestic violence and intimate partner violence.

My commitment to human rights runs deep, as I strive to amplify the voices of underrepresented communities in crucial conversations. With unwavering passion, I engage with these communities, empowering young girls and women to assert their rightful places at the decision-making table. Through advocacy and support, I aim to inspire and uplift, ensuring that everyone has a chance to be heard and to shape their futures.

Besides my academic and professional work, I am also a proud mother of four, to two beautiful girls and two strong boys. I have been happily married for 15 years and counting. Being a parent has taught me about compassion, resilience, and the need for inclusive communities. Since moving to Canada in August 2023, I have continued to focus on social justice. I want to use my skills and experiences to make a positive impact in my new community.
